classroom procedures
Procedures and routines that are followed on a daily basis is one of the key elements to a smooth running classroom. The first couple of weeks of school will be focused on these daily procedures and routines and will encourage learning and better behavior through responsibilities.
After we say the Pledge of Allegiance in the morning, the following pledge will be said by all of the children.
After we say the Pledge of Allegiance in the morning, the following pledge will be said by all of the children.
"I pledge to show my respect by listening to others, using my hands for helping, caring about others feelings, and being responsible for the things I say and do."
Morning Procedures
The student will greet the teacher and any other students as they walk quietly into the classroom. Then they will empty their backpacks and place the backpacks on their hook. Students will put their homework folder in their desk unless it is Friday. On Friday mornings, homework folders will be turned in for grading. Their daily folder will be turned into the inbox on my desk. Students will get out a pencil and paper, then begin working on the Bell Work that is listed on the board. Once Bell Work is done, students will turn in their papers and read a book of their choice silently at their desk.
Bathroom and Water Procedures
Bathroom and water breaks can be very distracting. Throughout the day, if students have to use the bathroom or get water during a lesson or quiet time, they will raise their hand and hold up a number based on what they need. Students will keep their hands in the air until they are acknowledged by the teacher with a thumbs up to signal them to go ahead and go. Raising a "1" in the air means that they have to go to the bathroom. A "2" means that they need to get water. A "shaking 3" means that it's an emergency.
Attention Getting Procedures
The phrase "Give Me Five!" will be used for getting the attention of the students. At first the teacher will say:

Give Me Five
1. On your bottom and criss-crossed applesauce.
2. Hands folded in your lap.
3. Face the speaker.
4. Listening eyes and ears.
5. Bubbles in your mouth (mouth closed).

As soon as the students understand what the steps are, I will be able to just say, "Give Me Five!"
Absent Student Procedures
I will have a folder by the door that is labeled "What You Missed" and the student will be responsible for picking up his or her missed work when they come back to school. All of the handouts and work will be stapled together with a title sheet with their name and date on it. Students will have one day per day of school missed to get the work turned back in for full credit.
Attendance Procedures
Attendance will be taken during Bell Work time. I will take attendance based on my seating chart by looking at who is in their seat and marking it on the attendance sheet. Students that come in after the tardy bell will turn in their tardy slips into the basket by the door and sign their name on the clipboard next to the basket with the time that they came into the classroom.
Indicating When You Don't Understand
Students will indicate whether they understand and when they do not understand by raising their hands with a thumbs up or a thumbs down. This will prevent any major disruptions during the lesson. By quietly raising their hands and giving the thumbs up, I will know that I can call on them to explain an answer. If they give the thumbs down, I will know that I need to explain the lesson better or work with them one-on-one.
Lining Up and Walking in the Hallway
The students will line up according to their assigned number. Once they are lined up quietly and look ready for the hall, the students will chant, "My hands are by my side, I'm standing straight and tall, I will not talk at all, I am ready for the hall." This chant will be posted beside the door so students will be reminded visually as well. I will also implement the "Secret Walker" strategy while the students are walking down the hall. I will keep a jar of popsicle sticks with the student's names on them on the corner of my desk. Before we leave to go into the hallway, I will pull one name out of the jar to be the secret walker. The students will not be told who the secret walker is, but they will be reminded that I am watching the secret walker to see if they are doing their best walking through the hallway. If the secret walker is doing an excellent job walking both to the location and back to the classroom, they will earn a reward such as an eraser or a sticker. If the secret walker has not done a good job, the name will not be revealed and the class will be told that the secret walker has not done a good job. The name of the student will not be revealed and the class will be told that they did not earn their reward. That child will be pulled aside later in the day to discuss the behaviors that they need to work on when walking in the hallway.
Intercom Announcements Procedures
If we have an intercom announcement, students will stop what they are doing and pay attention to what is being said.
Visitors to the Classroom Procedures (principal, parents, other teachers, student aides)
Visitors will be in and out throughout the year. Please work as normal and pretend like they are not there.
Collection of Student Work Procedures
Students will pass their papers to the side closest to my desk. I will call upon someone to get up and gather the papers. All papers will then be put in the inbox on my desk.
Distribution of Paper Procedures
I will call on someone to help pass out papers. If books are needed, students will gather books by groups. When working in centers, papers will be in the centers and ready for distribution.
Test Procedures
Students will be quiet during testing. If students complete their test before everyone is done, they will bring their paper to me and will be asked to read quietly at their desks until everyone is finished.
Group Work Procedures
Students will be allowed to talk during group work, but will need to keep the volume down low enough that only the people in their group can hear them. Work to be completed will be in the left pocket. Work will be completed, and if there is any paperwork that needs to be turned in, papers will be left in the group work folder in the right pocket.
Student Work Procedures: heading papers, pen or pencil, late work, due dates, etc.
The student’s name will be in the upper left hand corner of the paper with the date underneath it. The subject will be listed underneath that. All work will be done in pencil so the student can erase any mistakes. Late work will be accepted, but a percentage will be taken off for each day that it is late.
Homework Procedures: how much, when, grading it
Homework for the week will be sent home on Monday. There will be homework for each subject and will be due on Friday mornings. I will grade it over the weekend and return it to you the following week in the Thursday folder. If you fail to complete class work, it will be sent home with you for you to complete.
Classroom Transition Procedures
I will give a five minute warning, then tell students what we are transitioning to. Students will put away what they are working on by either turning it in or putting it in their homework folder and get quiet to prepare to listen to the instructions for the next activity.
Early Finisher Procedures
If students get done with one lesson and have time, they can work on their homework. If they don’t have any homework to complete, they can read at their desk quietly or pick an “I’m done” card and work on that activity.
Substitute Procedures
If I have to be out of the classroom, I expect the day to run as normal. The substitute will be left a folder with all information in it.
Emergency Situation Procedures: power failure, fire drill, shelter in place, etc.
In emergency situations, we will follow the safety plans put in place by the school. A flashlight will be inside the upper cabinet closest to the door and another one in my desk.
End of Day Procedures
Before packing up at the end of the day, the students will help with a quick classroom clean-up. The students will be told that I have chosed a mystery spot in the classroom and they should begin cleaning quietly. The students will straighten up books, learning center areas, use wipes to clean up desks, and throw away scraps of paper off the floor. Whoever finds the mystery spot will earn a reward at the end of the day.
